On 5 August eight brave supporters will be taking a leap of faith and jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet to raise money to help us save Happy Tails, our rescue centre in Bistrita Nasaud.

As explained in our last post on 3 May, we have just 4 months to raise the full purchase price of £70,000 to buy Happy Tails:

Our landlord is selling up and has given us a deadline of 30 September to buy it before it goes on the open market and we could lose it to another buyer.  So far, we’ve raised £32,400 – not even 50% of what we need!

Eight of our fundraisers decided that they can’t allow this to happen and have pledged to raise £8,000 between them to help save Happy Tails.  All first time skydivers, our ‘8 Jumpers for Happy Tails’ include: Claire Preston, June Chapman, Pippa and Derek Scott, Vivian Oliver, Thomas Morgan, Roxy Cotton and Lucy Miller.

“I can’t thank them and the other fundraisers enough for trying to save Happy Tails,” says charity co-founder Jayne Watts.  “Without people like them there’s no hope for the dogs in Romania, who are still treated like vermin on the streets and in the public shelters with stories too awful to tell here.

“Before we had Happy Tails our only option sometimes was to look the other way when we saw dogs in distress.  Good Romanian fosterers are few and far between and it’s desperately hard to find somewhere safe to take the dogs.   Having our own rescue centre Happy Tails is critical, so that we can continue to remove the dogs from squalor and danger. We simply can’t go back to looking the other way.”

Of course, we had to have a little mascot for the skydivers.  Rafa may look happy and healthy now in his fabulous forever home, but his life in a Romanian public shelter was anything but that, before he was rescued and taken to Happy Tails.
